Probe Obasanjo And Me Now – Atiku•Says, ‘I’ll not return to PDP’ Former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday called for a full-scale probe into the eight-year tenure of former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and himself, saying that is the only thing that would expose the underhand dealings that went on under their two -term tenure. He also said he is ready, as always, to appear before the House of Representatives probing the power sector if invited, except that he has no testimony to offer the committee because he knows nothing about the whole power project. Court Frees Bamaiyi After nine years of intense and protracted legal battle, a major victory yesterday came the way of former chief of army staff (COAS), Lt General Ishaya Bamaiyi, and his family at the Ikeja high court in Lagos, as Justice Joseph Olubunmi Oyewole discharged and acquitted him on the criminal charges of attempted murder of the publisher of The Guardian, Mr. Alex Ibru, and Mr. Isaac Porbeni, a former commissioner in Delta State. N17bn NNPC Debt Responsible For Fuel Queues – IPMANFuel queues may persist in the nation's capital and other parts of the country, as the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has declared that the situation will linger for long unless the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) remits N17 billion bridging debt owed IPMAN through the Petroleum Equalisation Fund (PEF) for their members to commence bridging of petroleum products. Okah’s Trial Begins In Jos •Falana blasts FG Lawyer to Mr. Henry Okah, the detained leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Mr. Femi Falana, yesterday blasted the Federal Government for what he called the " barbaric trial of a civilian under civil rule." The notable human rights activist, who arrived Jos, the capital of Plateau State, for the trial of Mr. Okah spoke with newsmen at the premises of the Federal High Court, Jos, where the trial was to take place and was temporarily disallowed into the premises by securitymen. Revocation: CBN Insists On Sealing Societe-Generale• Heads for Appeal Court The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday approached the Court of Appeal where it filed a notice of appeal against the pronouncement of an Abuja Federal High Court which voided its revocation of the operational licence of Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria last Wednesday. In its notice of appeal, the apex bank in the land argued that the lower court headed by Justice Binta Murtala Nyako erred in law when she held in her judgement that the revocation of the bank’s operational licence was not done within the ambit of the law. Invoking the original jurisdiction of the appellate court, counsel to CBN listed seven grounds of appeal in which he contended that its revocation of the licence of the bank was not done in bad faith as submitted by Justice Nyako....more

We’ll Root Out Culture Of Impunity – Yar’Adua President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua yesterday stated that his administration was determined to root out "the culture of impunity," which enables corruption to thrive in Nigeria. Yar’Adua, who said this when he had a breakfast meeting with Mr. Jimmy Carter, former President of the United States of America, further said that he had come to the conclusion that corruption continued to thrive in Nigeria because of total disregard for existing laws and regulations.
